In my Florida divorce case, what is a petition?

The Petition is the first document that is filed in a Florida divorce case. A Petition indicates who the parties are, do they have any children? It also indicates what claims am I asking for in this divorce? Am I asking for time-sharing of a particular type? Am I asking for an equal or an unequal distribution of marital assets and liabilities? Do I want attorney’s fees? Do I need alimony? You look at that as the first document, but also the fundamental document, laying out the claims for one of the parties in the divorce case.
